Houseboat summary

The houseboat is situated in a quiet area in Amsterdam North only 15 minutes away from the city center and at the same time close to the national park "Twiske". Amsterdam is bicycle city number 1 in the world and to experience Amsterdam to the fullest a bicycle is a must. We provide four bikes that are included in the price (mind you to rent a bike at a rental shop will cost you about €20 per bike per 24 hours). You can reach the city center by ferry, which is for free and bikes can be taken along. Since our houseboat is just a 5 minute bike ride away from the ferry you can enjoy the busy city during the day and chill out at night chill in a peaceful environment.

Our place is ideal for those who want to come by car since parking is still for free here, which is very unusual for Amsterdam!

There is a supermarket only 5 minutes away and there are plenty of nice restaurants in the area.

We designed and built the entire houseboat ourselves. We live on the top floor and the area that you can book is on the bottom floor. Our intention is to bring people closer together and to offer a unique experience on the water. We have put a lot of love into details. We have a cozy sitting area in the garden and you can make use of the BBQ. It is possible to swim next to the houseboat, feed the swans and ducks and you are also welcome to use our SUP board. Finally there is a wifi and plenty of games available.

Houseboat description

Our houseboat has a modern design with many round shapes. It has a touch of Eastern influences and also has details of a traditional houseboat. There are two sleeping quarters which are cozy cupboard beds that can be closed off with little doors, but there is still the possibility to look into the main living space. We've built domes inside the cupboard beds, which give a very spacious feeling and it becomes extra special when you turn on the lights.

The sitting area in the main area is elevated as to feel connected with the water around. You can open one of the windows if you like to be closer to the ducks and swans and like to feed them some oats, corn or salad, but no bread since this is not healthy for them.

There is a kitchenette where you can make coffee or tea.

The bathroom is designed in such a way that one can take a shower in privacy while another can still use the sink. In the closet you can find extra blankets and pillows for sitting outside and there are plenty of games you can play with your family and friends. Also, there is WiFi available.

Outside in the garden there is a pick-nick table and a barbecue. When its sunny it is really nice to sit here to have breakfast or enjoy a glass of wine when the sun is going down and possibly watch the geese fly over.

About the area

NDSM

Close to the houseboat is NDSM. This is an old shipyard of Amsterdam taken over by artists and ever since a creative hot spot where every weekend events are organised.

Next to NDSM is the ferry platform. The ferry on the left will bring you to central station. The ferry on the right will take you to Pontsteiger, close to the most authentic part of Amsterdam: the Jordaan.

Pllek

A very special place next to the IJ with a fantastic view over Amsterdam. The food is excellent and it's good value for money. They have a big outside terrace next to the water and there is always something going on.

Noorderlicht

Another great spot for a drink and some finger food next to the IJ with view over Amsterdam. They have an outside terrace with a lovely podium. During the weekends there is a big chance that there is live music.

Brrood

Next to the ferry with a lovely terrace, this is a nice place for an amazing breakfast where they have fresh baked bread and coffee while you wait for the ferry to arrive.

Marina

A stylish restaurant with a bar inside the marina of Amsterdam.

Amsterdam Lookout

From central station there is a ferry going 24/7 to Buiksloterweg which is next to the 'Amsterdam Lookout Tower'. There is a 360 degrees turning restaurant inside and from the roof you have an amazing view over the whole of Amsterdam. Plus you can take a ride in a mechanic swing, that swings over the edge.

Westergasfabriek

It used to deliver gas to the citizens of Amsterdam, but since 2008 it has been renovated and given a new function. Nowadays it is a place where you can always see or do something. Watch a movie, visit markets of listen to music. Next to the Westergasfabriek is the Westerpark, a nice place to escape the busy city.

Vondelpark

After a visit to the 'Rijksmuseum' and the 'van Gogh museum' there is no better place to relax then the Vondelpark. Especially in the weekend the atmosphere in the park is great and there is a lot going on. There are a number of nice places where you can eat and drink and in the weekends during the summer there are free concerts in the open air theater in the center of the park.

Houseboat owner

Karuna

The houseboat you're about to book is a labor of love and took us three years to build. We were lucky, because nowadays the chance to get a spot for a houseboat in Amsterdam is practically zero. We joined our neighbours in their search for a casco houseboat, which everybody had to then finish themselves.

Ed, being an architect, designed the interior of the houseboat himself. His signature as an architect is round shapes and practicality. The process of building was not entirely set beforehand, but it was also a creative process that changed and got shaped along the way. We came up with many new ideas which we then manifested into reality.

We both have an affinity for symbols, especially sacred geometry. On the front side of the houseboat hangs a construction of the Seed of Life symbol, which is also the name of our houseboat. The inside of the houseboat is filled with different kinds of symbols, from the Ohm sign, yin yang to Buddha's eyes. We both love to travel, often to countries like India and Thailand and when you come to the boat, you'll definitely see it has Eastern influences.

We enjoy welcoming people from all over the world to stay with us and offer them an unique experience. It's all in the details ;)

With love,

Ed & Karuna

Have a good stay Show original

We loved our accommodation: warm welcome from Karuna and Edwin. Pleasant encounter with swans and ducks. The 4 loaner bikes were very useful. Very scenic experience of taking the boat bus, including at 1am. Quiet and charming residential area near the center.

Bed boat bike houseboat was magic!

My family of four just stayed in Karuna and Edwin’s magnificent boathouse. It is truly a magical place… every detail thoughtfully and beautifully designed. It was a welcome retreat from the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam. But it was so close and so easy to get there. The cupboard beds were so cozy and really roomy. The design of every detail was masterful. But most of all, Karuna and Edwin were very accommodating, welcoming and helpful. We went on a couple of great bike rides on their recommendations. The highest recommendation!!!! Thank you Karuna.

    A true vacation

We were so extraordinarily lucky to come upon Karuna and Ed's place - it was perfect and what a wonderful experience! First of all, they were so communicative - answered all our questions and their guidebook was incredibly helpful. It had all the details we needed and some great recommendations. When we arrived, Ed was there to greet us and show us around the houseboat. We happily took the ferry into Amsterdam each day (so easy and just a 15 minute walk) and then retired to the houseboat to relax in the evenings. I took nice morning and evening walks along the water. My boys loved sleeping in the cabinets and feeding the swans and ducks who are frequent and amusing visitors. The houseboat is so thoughtfully laid out and it has everything you need. Our family of four was content and cozy for our stay. We got groceries at the local grocery store and made our meals there. Next time we are back there is no question we will be staying here!

    Fantastic short vacation

It was our first vacation on a houseboat and the whole family was thrilled! The hosts are very friendly and on arrival they explained everything you need to know about the houseboat and the surrounding area. The decor is wonderful and the berths are very cozy. Our children particularly liked feeding the ducks and coots from the window. We would book a vacation with Ed and Karuna again if we go to Amsterdam!

    Exceptional

The bike and ferry were great, loved the tile things in the bathroom, and for the girls coffee and tea. And of course the feeding of the ducks from the window. Very nice check in with info and a fantastic map as a part of the interior.
