Houseboat summary

When visiting Amsterdam with friends or family, I love to welcome you aboard my spacious houseboat, built in 1907. You will be staying aboard a former freight ship, completely renovated and now a very comfortable and spacious holiday home with a nice terrace in front of the boat. During the extensive renovation we made sure to insulate the boat properly. And we installed a brand new heating system, so you have a warm and pleasant stay during cold days and winter time. We're docked in a charming harbor just 3 minutes walking from Central Station. Although lots of main attractions are around the corner, you will be surprised about the quietness that this area has to offer!

Houseboat description

The houseboat is docked right along the quay, so you can step aboard right away. Once you enter the ship, you will see that many nautical details are still visible. For example the original roof elements that give the space a very cool and rustic ambiance. Also the portholes add to the 'ship experience' that we offer. Although I live on the same boat, you will hardly notice I'm there. The place is very well insulated and you have all the privacy you want. In the front of the ship you will find a nice terrace where you can sit and enjoy the scenery of our harbor.

In the apartment you have two bedrooms, each with a comfortable double bed and an en suite bathroom with a shower and sink. The bedrooms are adjacent to the living room. We have a separate toilet next to the living room.

The open kitchen is fully equipped and enables you to make a proper meal. At least, if you can resist the many restaurants that are found within a few minutes walking. Of course I will share my personal favorites with you. Furthermore there are many bars just around the corner. Just a few more steps away and you will hit the famous red light district, the Dam Square, Zeedijk and the Nieuwmarkt.

Walk a bit further and you will find the Jordaan Area on the West side, and the Waterloo Square and Rembrand Square to the South. All the other parts of town are very easy to reach with public transport, and of course by bike. There is a bike rental just around the corner.

Note that the boat is fully equipped with central heating, so you are assured to be comfortably warm all year round. Your apartment has a private entrance and you don't need to share anything with anyone.

Please note that you can check in until 19.00 for sure. And if you want a later check in, we kindly ask a service fee of 20 euro, to be paid in cash on arrival.

Just walk 3 minutes to the East and you will see our harbor right away. Could not be easier!

About the area

Our harbor is one of the oldest in Amsterdam and you can still feel the rich history thanks to the many old ships and the wonderful houses across the street. Although we live pretty much in the middle of town, you will be surprised by the quietness our quay has to offer. The reason it is a dead end where only people who live here come.

The following places are located within a few minutes walking:

* Central Station

* Zeedijk and Red Light District

* Nieuwmarkt (great bars, restaurants and terraces)

* Hannekes Boom (unique bar with amazing outside terrace, great bears and good food)

* Pollux (really laid back bar, right across the street)

* Nemo Science Museum

* Maritime Museum with a replica of the VOC Ship 'Amsterdam'

* Dam Square

    Nice boat, great location

    We really enjoyed our stay on the boat - booking and checking in was very easy - Casper was there to greet us and explained everything we needed.

    The best thing about the boat is the location - everything is in easy walking distance - centraal station, the old town centre, the zoo and the museums - which was very useful as we had two children with us. It is also surprisingly quiet given how central the location is.

    The boat itself was well heated, with good cooking and toilet facilities. We didn’t have WiFi but Casper did offer to come and install a booster which we didn’t bother with in the end as we were out most of the time. It might’ve been nice to have a sofa to sit on but this was a small issue as the dining table was great to sit round as a family, and Nina and Casper very kindly left some tea/coffee/ basic supplies for us to use.

    We had to be careful getting on and off the boat with young children but we expected this and it really wasn’t a problem.

    Overall, a great place to stay in what turned out to be a very child friendly city. Thanks!

    Amazing!

    Wow, everything about this stay was fantastic. The boat is roomy, clean, comfortable, and conveniently located. It is centrally located, but still quiet & cozy. It felt like home, and I will definitely stay there again!

    Roomy apartment with good location

    The Vermeer apartment on the house boat Utopia was roomy and the beds were very comfortable. The apartment has a very modern feel and the kitchen is nicely appointed.  It was nice to have 2 separate bedrooms each with a shower and a separate central bathroom. This really helped our group get ready quickly.  The location is very convenient to Central Station, The NEMO Science Center and Dam Square. The house boat is accessible from a untrafficked access road off the main road and this made it easy for an Uber driver to pick us up a few different times right in front.

    On arriving we felt we had been mislead by the sentence from the houseboat description “On the front of the ship you will find a nice terrace where you can sit and enjoy the scenery of our harbor”. There is not a terrace on the front of the ship. There is a wooden picnic table on the sidewalk next to the houseboat and from that location there is not a view of the harbor. Also, other than the picnic table benches there was no where to sit to relax, enjoy morning coffee, meals or evening drinks with a view of the harbor as we had anticipated.   Inside the apartment there are 4 wooden chairs at the table but no other sofa or chairs.   We spent a rainy afternoon in the apartment and it would have been nice have a place to sit, relax and read.

    RESPONSE FROM HOST:

    Dear Gene,

    Thank you for your review. Always happy with feed-back of guests, it helps improving the service and houseboat experience!

    I am sorry that you felt mislead by that sentence about the terrace. It is indeed a wooden picnic table, that is located in front of the boat, next to the entrance, between a tree and some nice plants. Next to that is the untrafficked access road off the main road that you mentioned. Perhaps it is just a matter of wording. I call it terrace, but you could also call it a little garden or describe it as just a picnic table. However you call it, I am happy to have the spot outside so visitors can use it, because it is pretty seldom to have in Amsterdam. A lot of guests have used it for breakfast, to eat dinner or just have drinks outside. Nice weather provided of course.

    About the view, I really do not know how to describe the scenery of the old harbor in another way. You see some boats, the old houses on the other side of the street and the modern building
    s across the water. I recently found out that Michiel de Ruyter, Holland's most famous naval hero with the rank of lieutenant-admiral general, actually lived directly across the street since the year 1655 until he died in 1677.

    I chose not to put a sofa in the boat and go for a more open space in the apartment. Most guests use the beds if they want to lay down and rest a little, but if I get this feedback more often I will definitely consider putting one in. Hope you had a nice stay anyway! Greetings Casper

    Thanks!
